On September 24, we held the first class of this school year for the “Yanomi Project,” a collaborative initiative with Yano-Minami Elementary School and Sakura Saku, a collective of carpenters, architects, filmmakers, and designers!
▪ This Year’s Theme: Building “The Yanomi Tree” (working title)
This year, we will create a tree-shaped arch, “The Yanomi Tree” (working title), in the community exchange room that connects the school building and the courtyard! As in the previous project, the arch will be built from furniture that is no longer in use. We also plan to dye old clothes that can no longer be worn, such as jeans, to make the tree’s flower petals.
▪ Group Work and Poster Making
This time, the sixth graders took part and split into three groups: a Construction Team, which dismantled furniture and attached the wood pieces; a Film Team, which recorded the arch’s progress; and a Design Team, which made posters to inform the local community.
The Construction Team learned from Sakura Saku’s carpenters as they used tools to attach the wood pieces. The arch’s tree is already starting to reflect the history and journey of Yano-Minami Elementary School.
Everyone also worked together to dye the jeans that will become the petals! With guidance from the Sakura Saku team, the students did the dyeing themselves, and each petal turned out with its own unique shade.
For the posters, the students came up with ideas together to invite local residents to our next joint class, which will be open to the community. Next time, we’ll get the whole community involved as we continue to finish the arch!
