It has already been a month and a half since I started my master’s studies in Sweden. The days seem to fly by as I try to adjust to university life and my new surroundings. Even amid these busy days, I’m learning a lot through lectures, group work, and daily conversations with my friends. Although I sometimes struggle with assignments and the weather, I’m really enjoying my time here. Since this is the first post in my study abroad diary, I’d like to share a bit about my university life.

公園に散歩に行った時の写真 (stocking up on sunshine before the cold winter comes!)

In most of the classes, we focus on discussions and workshops. We also sometimes have guest lectures from PhD students and professionals working in the Swedish construction industry. In the first few weeks, I felt nervous about expressing my thoughts and discussing them with others in class. I’ve gradually gotten used to this learning style and have come to enjoy it. In every lecture, I’m exposed to new perspectives and ways of thinking through interactions with classmates and lecturers who have different backgrounds and experiences.

特に好きだったディスカッション式の講義 (one of my favorite discussion styles)

発表のための準備 (quick preparation for our presentation)

In addition, group work is part of each course. In groups of three to five students, we develop a specific research question related to the course content. We then conduct literature reviews, interviews, and site visits to gain practical insights. One of the most interesting aspects of this work is the peer-review process. We provide feedback to another group by sharing our opinions, asking questions, and offering suggestions on their report and presentation. This process also helps me take a step back and reflect on my own work more objectively. For instance, I’ve started thinking more carefully about how to present our research clearly and whether our approach is appropriate and well supported.

My first term in Sweden will come to an end in about two weeks. It has actually been hectic, but also full of enjoyable moments. I hope to keep making the most of each day without pushing myself too hard.

On September 24, we held the first class of this school year for the “Yanomi Project,” a collaborative initiative with Yano-Minami Elementary School and Sakura Saku, a collective of carpenters, architects, filmmakers, and designers!

▪ This Year’s Theme: Building “The Yanomi Tree” (working title)

This year, we will create a tree-shaped arch, “The Yanomi Tree” (working title), in the community exchange room that connects the school building and the courtyard! As in the previous project, the arch will be built from furniture that is no longer in use. We also plan to dye old clothes that can no longer be worn, such as jeans, to make the tree’s flower petals.

▪ Group Work and Poster Making

This time, the sixth graders took part and split into three groups: a Construction Team, which dismantled furniture and attached the wood pieces; a Film Team, which recorded the arch’s progress; and a Design Team, which made posters to inform the local community.

The Construction Team learned from Sakura Saku’s carpenters as they used tools to attach the wood pieces. The arch’s tree is already starting to reflect the history and journey of Yano-Minami Elementary School.

Everyone also worked together to dye the jeans that will become the petals! With guidance from the Sakura Saku team, the students did the dyeing themselves, and each petal turned out with its own unique shade.

For the posters, the students came up with ideas together to invite local residents to our next joint class, which will be open to the community. Next time, we’ll get the whole community involved as we continue to finish the arch!
